Promotes tag renewal requirements that most AR drivers failed to meet in 2014

The Arkansas Department of Finance & Administration (DFA), in partnership with the Information Network of Arkansas (INA), today launched a public awareness campaign with the theme “Due Before You Renew” to educate citizens about the three things they must do first – assess, pay property taxes and have car insurance – before they can renew their vehicle registration. With the statewide property assessment deadline less than two weeks away, now is the perfect time to remind drivers that their property assessment is tied to their vehicle registration renewal status. Put simply: If you don’t assess, you can’t get new car tags.

Failure to assess on time is the number one reason why Arkansans are unable to renew their vehicle registration. According to DFA, drivers had not assessed nearly 1.4 million vehicles, owed property taxes on 726,604 vehicles and had not insured 400,483 vehicles during their registration renewal periods in 2014. This means the drivers of more than 66 percent of all licensed Arkansas vehicles could not immediately renew their registration and were at risk for expired tags – all because they missed at least one renewal requirement.

“These vehicle registration renewal statistics point to a public awareness issue,” DFA Assistant Commissioner Walter Anger said. “Drivers may not know the law or simply forget about it until they get a renewal notice and realize they aren’t eligible to renew. Our goal with the Due Before You Renew campaign is to help Arkansans understand the relationship between assessment, property taxes and tag renewal. When drivers take care of their renewal requirements on time, they can enjoy a fast and stress-free tag renewal process online at ARSTAR.com, and they won’t have to scramble to do everything at a revenue office on the day their tags expire.”

Motorists can go to the campaign website www.DueBeforeYouRenew.com to sign up for assessment and property tax email reminders so they won’t miss the deadlines. Site visitors can also watch a funny educational video and view an infographic to find out how much it could cost if they failed to assess, pay their property taxes and renew their tags on time.

DFA and INA will jointly promote campaign messages on social media with the hashtag #DueBeforeYouRenew, and air public service announcements on Arkansas radio stations. DFA will include information in vehicle registration renewal notices, and post campaign materials in Revenue Offices and County Assessor and Collector locations around the state.
